Workshop on Sinkhole Insurance

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 noon

HAC and FCAN are joining together to hold a workshop on sinkholes and insurance.  Seating is limited, so please RSVP to Ginny Stevans at hac_president@hacfl.org, or call HAC at
727-967-8220 if you are interested in attending.

There will be industry experts involved in this workshop including a geologist, sinkhole engineer, insurance industry representative, Office of Insurance Regulations, Legal Expert, and CFO Alex Sink's office.

There will be workshops with these experts and at the end of the workshop there will be a question and answer period. This workshop is being done to gain solutions to the sinkhole issues we have here in Pasco and Hernando Counties. We already know there is a problem, now we want to work on solutions.

Pasco and Hernando counties are prone to sinkholes and insurance rates have skyrocketed as a result. This makes it difficult for people to maintain their budgets and some may even be unable to keep their homes.

Pasco legislators slipped an "opt-in" provision into this year's insurance bill that strips sinkhole insurance out of homeowner insurance policies in Pasco and Hernando counties. Supposedly, this would reduce rates. Some banks and mortgage companies will still require the coverage.

Consumers are complaining that they are confused by the new law and there is concern that some people may wind up without coverage when a sinkhole strikes.

What can we do about sinkhole insurance coverage and problems with insurance in Pasco and Hernando counties?  You're invited to help figure out the answers at this important workshop.

Seating is limited.  Please email "hac_president@hacfl.org" if you want to attend. Attendance is by invitation only.

HOT TOPICS IN TALLY, End of Regular Session May 2007:

HOUSE BILL 1223: Sponsored by Representative Alan Hays, R-Umatilla.

The bill creates a task force that is to figure out how to dissolve Citizens and get the insurance companies back in business -- at realistically "high" rates! Cost of Task Force: $250,000 of our tax dollars!

"We need to have low premiums. However, they are unrealistically low," Rep. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, told the House Jobs and Entrepreneurship Council.

This bill is NOT a consumer friendly bill and will lead to the ability of insurance companies to raise rates higher than you could have EVER guessed!

This Bill has passed two committees and THESE are your representatives that passed this Bill.

REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU VOTE!

This week on ABC Flashpoint: Skyrocketing insurance rates are sending some families into foreclosure. Others who own their homes outright are simply priced out of the insurance market and can only cross their fingers... hoping this hurricane season will spare them. This Sunday on Flashpoint, you'll learn about this crisis from a lawmaker, an insurance agent and an unhappy homeowner. All three sit down with me to discuss the problem and some solutions. Don't miss ABC Flashpoint this Aug. 6th, Sunday morning at 11:00.

HAC member Wil Nickerson did a great job as the homeowner. Thanks WIL!
